Ten years ago, I was introduced to dynamic program that promoted literacy among African American children called Freedom School. As a servant-leader intern, I was introduced to the works of Walter Dean Myers, Sharon Draper and Anthony Browder. I had a truly life-changing experience where I connected both culture and education as I realized that I could make a difference in my community. Ever since that summer of service, I have served in numerous capacities related to Freedom Schools and even presenting at the Samuel Dewitt Proctor Institute. Nowadays, I still feel a burning desire to resurrect what we once had in San Diego with our Freedom School summers. Check out Freedom School and Children's Defense Fund's other project at www.childrensdefense.org . There's room in the movement. Rev. Bruce T. Jackson |
